On Thursday, November 21, the UNG Sinfonietta will present a concert of music inspired by folk traditions of Appalachia and the British Isles. The program will include works for string orchestra, strings and harp, and full symphony orchestra. Sinfonietta will perform two pieces by Atlanta-based composer Martha Bishop: Irish Emeralds and Early American Carols. The strings will play selections from Jack Jarrett’s American Folk Song Suite, while winds and percussion will join the group for Ralph Vaughan Williams’s English Folk Songs Suite and Alun Hoddinott’s Folk-Song Suite, which draws from Welsh tunes. In honor of the graduating seniors, Sinfonietta will also perform the finale from Franz Joseph Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony. The concert will take place at 7:30 pm in Shott Auditorium on the Dahlonega campus. Admission is free.
