Ellen Graham Bio:
Ellen Graham has been working for Department of Natural Resources Parks, Recreation
and Historic Sites Division (PRHS) for 23 years. She began her career as an intern at Unicoi State Park in Helen, Georgia, in 1996. In 17 years at Unicoi, she worked as an Interpretive Ranger, Recreation Director and Resource Manager. She holds a B.S. in Education in Recreation and Leisure Studies with an emphasis in Resource Management from the University of Georgia.
Ellen is currently the Chief Naturalist and supervises the PRHS Division Interpretive Unit, providing guidance and support to all 64 Parks and Historic Sites. She assists sites in writing Interpretive and Recreation Plans to identify potential partnerships, community contacts and helps define each site’s unique interpretive theme. Her other responsibilities include coordinating all state-wide programming efforts such as the Annual Program Theme, National Trails Day, Your State Parks Day and Get Outdoors Month. For the past three years Ms. Graham has also coordinated the First Day Hikes for all 50 states. She plans interpretive training opportunities and shares ideas for new recreational trends to incorporate into parks.
Almost 20 years ago the discussion began to revive the state-wide Junior Ranger Program from the existing program that started in 2002. To revamp the program, for the past five years, Ellen has worked diligently to create 59 new site-specific books for each park and historic site. In addition, she participated in the Georgia DNR Leadership Academy as well as the National State Park Leadership School in West Virginia.
Ellen was born in Big Springs, TX but has lived in Georgia all her life. Many people know her as “Ellen from Helen”. She currently lives near Lake Burton and enjoys playing in the outdoors with her favorite “Junior Rangers” sons Will, 13 and Cannon, 9.
