Live Artists at work around historic Downtown Dahlonega – in the heart of the North Georgia Mountains. If you are looking for a unique experience this spring, look no further than Dahlonega, Saturday, May 10, 2014. Take the Art Trail around downtown and see artists doing what they do best, creating art and fine crafts. Chestatee Artists, a local art organization, is providing demonstrations in a variety of media as artists show their creative talents from 11 am to 4 pm. The 4th Annual Art Trail is part of a focus on art in Dahlonega during the designated “Art Month.”
You can start the art trail from anywhere in downtown as demonstrators “ring” all sides of the public square. Watch as painters, jewelers, and fine crafters create their original works. Some of the merchants who are hosting artists are Dahlonega General Store, High Cotton, Back Porch Oyster Bar, and Awakening Fine Art. Artists can also be seen in front of the Visitors Center. Some of the artists participating are: oil painters, Wanda Smith, Carole Barker, Joyce Fox, and Cathy Ritch; watercolor artist, Oscar Rayneri; acrylic painter, AJ Wolff; Leather arts, Tom Slavicek; chainsaw carver, Carl Pirone; folk art wind chimes, Pattie Pirone; stain glass, Letty Rayneri.
Several downtown Dahlonega shops will also provide arts and craft demonstrators during regular store hours. On the north side of the square, see the creative whimsy of artist Grant Searcey in Searcey Gallery & Studio. Stroll a bit further and see the original work of painters, jewelers, and fine crafts in Awakening Fine Art. Next door, Bleu Gallery features talented artists. Just a few steps down that block you can catch Brad Walker creating his one of a kind pottery. Around the corner on North Park Street, see arts and crafts in The Picket Fence. Cross North Park Street and go into Cranberry Corners where you will find Jon Dahlstrom, drawing his unique creations. Continue your stroll down Main Street to see regional crafts in Folkways Craft Gallery.
You will not want to miss taking a “walk” around the University of North Georgia campus to view the 5th Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibition, which is free and open to the public. Information on the self-guided walking tour of 18 sculpture pieces will be available at the Information & Welcome Center, just inside the campus’s main entrance, or at the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Visitors Center.
