SUMMARY:Joe Chapman - "Cream of the Crop" Classical Piano Concert
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Joe Chapman will present the "cream of the crop" of classical piano music in concert at the University of North Georgia's Hoag Student Center Auditorium on Wednesday\, February 27 at 12:00 p.m. and on Friday\, March 1 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and the public is cordially invited to attend.\n\n \n\nThe program features three piano masterworks beginning with Chopin's Ballade No. 4 in F Minor considered by many to be one of the most challenging pieces in the entire repertoire. Following a simplistic introduction\, its enchanting theme draws the listener further and further inward until it completely absorbs the entire mind with a complex labyrinth of sound. Next is the Appassionata Sonata\, which clearly demonstrates Beethoven's mastery of classical form by transforming a simple arpeggio into an extended work displaying the creative powers of the instrument. The finale is the iconic and ever-popular Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin. Originally criticized for its lack of depth\, the rhapsody has grown in stature to become one of the most highly-favored works in all of music literature.\n\n \n\nJoe Chapman has been a Professor of Music at the University of North Georgia since 1983. He has performed hundreds of concerts for arts associations\, colleges\, schools\, and churches throughout the state of Georgia. Having received a doctorate in piano performance from the University of South Carolina in 1987\, he has served the profession in a number of capacities\, including a term as president of the Georgia Music Teachers Association.\n\n \n\nFor more information\, contact the UNG Music Department at 706-864-1423 or music@ung.edu.
